From runway rehabilitation and new taxiways to retaining walls and noise bunds, Tensar Technology is able to offer environmentally suitable and economical solutions for airfields and airports. In fact, we have many years of experience in cutting construction costs and minimising maintenance requirements.
Weak ground? Tensar has the solution
Airport pavements must sometimes be constructed on very soft ground – causing not inconsiderable problems for engineers. Tensar geogrids can strengthen weak subgrades and control differential settlement, creating a mechanically stabilised layer for taxiways and runways which is able to cope with the intense loads from aircraft movements. This reduces the aggregate needed, therefore extending service life and producing the potential for significant time, cost and environmental benefits.
Resurfacing runways and taxiways
Where existing runways are prone to reflective or fatigue cracking and require resurfacing, Tensar’s asphalt reinforcement systems can be the perfect solution, able to be laid over most existing surfaces. Tensar asphalt reinforcement grids can inhibit cracking and the composite products reinforce. Moreover, they can also provide a low permeability barrier to the deleterious effects of water infiltration, further extending the pavement life and reducing future maintenance costs. This low permeability barrier can also prove useful in the event of fuel spillages.
Building barriers
In environmentally sensitive or built-up areas, steep earth bunds may be used as visual, blast or noise barriers. TensarTech Earth Retaining Systems are not only able to create a stable barrier, but also allow the possible use of site-won materials as fill – further adding to the environmental benefits. Other Tensar systems offer protection against soil erosion in areas subject to jet blast damage, in addition to conditions such as drainage channels and swales.
